Dance to Your Health

We as a world are more aware than ever of the importance of physical fitness to our overall health.

While we remain aware of the need for physical activity far too many of us find far too few reasons to incorporate physical activity into our daily lives and routines. There are many reasons that we procrastinate in this particular effort. For some time is the defining factor while others will readily admit that they have no appreciation whatsoever for those activities that come to mind when exercise is considered.

Whatever your reason for not incorporating exercise and physical activity into your daily routine, have you considered dancing for your health? There are all kinds of wonderful reasons to dance though I can think of very few that would be better than dancing for the sake of your health and physical well being. The good news when it comes to dancing is that in most instances it doesn’t feel as though you are getting exercise and the burning of calories doesn’t sting nearly as much when you’re having fun burning them.

Dancing has evolved a great deal and while the history of dance is a long and noble history. Even, one might add, a quite manly history for those men who haven’t considered dancing in the past.

Benefits of Dancing

In addition to burning calories, a good thing for dieters everywhere, dancing also helps strengthen your muscles and bones. It can provide either a low impact or high impact workout according to your wishes and the music you select, it can be entertaining and feel like fun rather than a chore-this means you are more likely to actually do it than many other exercise programs, and it can help tone all areas of your body rather than focusing on one particular area as many exercises do.

Dancing also provides an excellent opportunity to socialize and meet others if you take classes while in the process helping you gain a better sense of balance and grace (those like me who have absolutely no sense of grace could greatly benefit from this alone). Dancing, and the physical activity alone can help you ward off potential illnesses that are often associated with excess weight and too little physical activity. Even as little as thirty minutes of dance 4 days a week can bring about profound results when it comes to your overall health and well being.

More importantly however than any of these benefits of dancing mentioned above dancing is fun. This means that you will enjoy life a little, laugh a little, and accidentally work a little physical fitness into your life without feeling as though you are suffering for the sake of doing so. So many people get very little physical activity because they do not see physical activity as fun.

If you are wondering what sort of dance is right for you, there are many from which to choose. Square dancing is great fun for couples as are ballroom and swing dancing. Line dancing, contra square dancing, clogging, and tap dancing can be great fun in larger groups or as a participant in a class. If you want something a little sexier for your dance efforts you can always try Salsa dancing, Flamenco dancing, or belly dancing.

If you live in or around a relatively large community it is quite likely that you can find classes or teachers for private lessons for each of these forms of dance quite easily. You do want to make sure that anyone you take lessons from knows what they are doing. You can also look in your local paper for square dancing groups or bars or clubs that offer line dancing classes on designated nights during the week.

Whether you have been dancing all your life or are a rank novice when it comes to dancing, this is a great way to bring physical fitness into your life and improving your health without feeling as though you are really working for it or experiencing a sense of dread at the very thought.

The popular story of lion cub Simba who struggles to accept adult responsibilities and his destiny as king, has been completely reworked for the stage to offer a universal fable for adults

The popular story of lion cub Simba who struggles to accept adult responsibilities and his destiny as king, has been completely reworked for the stage to offer a universal fable for adults. The soundtrack has been enhanced: the show contains fifteen musical numbers including the five songs feature film written by Elton John and Tim Rice. They have composed three new songs in a style pop-rock. To magnify the African context of the booklet, new songs, including Zulu choirs, have been specially written by Lebo M, South African artist.

Few weeks ago, it was announced that the last of the Lion King Theatre Mogador in Paris will take place Sunday, July 25, 2010.

“We want to remain on the public and critical success and so give the French a great memory of the Lion King. We had over one million spectators in Mogador since October 4, 2007 and are delighted but we believe that it ‘a good time to announce the end of the show,” said Sandrine Mouras, CEO of Stage Entertainment France, the show’s producer.

With over one million spectators and being played 7 times a week, The Lion King showed more than a musical quality could give itself over a long period in a theater.

What has changed also, is the adding of the scene where Simba drop insect sticky “but feeding” of the jungle. This scene, which takes place in the middle of the song Hakuna Matata, existed in the cartoon. She had been staged on Broadway, but Julie Taymor, who made the staging, wanted to delete it and do not wash up in Paris. In the third season, we can discover with props slightly different from the originals.

The Lion King, a production of high quality miraculously giving life to animals and plants in Africa epitomized by more than 40 actors and dancers. Few shows, in fact, can tell a story so well known and moving and simultaneously violating all the rules known and appreciated as popular art.

With a talented staging (Julie Taymor) and memorable compositions (Elton John, Tim Rice and Lebo M), the Musical THE LION KING offers a show you breathless!

People wonder how it’s possible to plan and run a party without any negatives during the event

People wonder how it’s possible to plan and run a party without any negatives during the event.  Most don’t realize that even during the most wonderful party thinks can go wrong.  The key is to stay calm, apply some thought to whatever is happening, take care of it and most guests will never know there was an issue.
Don’t let your guests know if there is a problem emerging, the host or hostess can take care of it and a guest will be happy with their ignorance of the situation.  Extra snacks and liquids are always essential to have on hand in case the preparation is not acceptable, more people show up than planned or if someone mistakenly drops or spills an ingredient or a whole dish.  Have a plan where everything will be placed, make sure all equipment to be used has been tested before everyone arrives.
Ideally the host or hostess is able to provide all necessary items because if assignments are made to other guests they may forget.  This can cause a problem at party time so be sure to do any request for loaned items far in advance of the party.  It is better if all items needed are on hand prior to the event.
Party menu’s can be planned so there is more preparation done prior to the party time instead of waiting to the last minute.  Many food processes can be accomplished days ahead and then put in the refrigerator.  There are always last minute tasks to do and if there is extra help many of those tasks can be assigned.  If possible, food and drink should always be available for guests to serve themselves, this way the host or hostess can enjoy their party also.
There will always be problems arising during a big event but as long as no one knows about it, the event is still considered a success.

Ever felt despondent

Ever felt despondent? – This article will ignite your very soul! The feeling is grey, thoughts are dulled, you cannot fight through the malaise and yet the candle in the midst flickers brightly. You have to get out and feel the brilliance of song and dance.

Theatre comes in all sorts of forms – Dance, rhetoric, comedy, satire and so much more. It was then with a degree of intrepidation that Claire & I accepted an invitation from a friend of ours to attend Woza Cape Town. A degree of concern that the entire cast are children aged from four years to late teens. How could they possibly bring polish, prowess and professionalism to the stage? In addition the location of the theatre is District Six, the very centre of forced removal anguish during our apartheid era.

Parking outside the theatre we were reassured that our car was in “ Good hands my Lannie (boss) “, we entered what looked very much like an old church. Sounds of jazz filled the small theatre and the sound of convivial banter drew us to their bar area. Ah ha! Now the spirits can rise, both Brian Notcutt and Andrew Russell are here tonight. The founders and drivers behind Woza Cape Town are two somewhat gifted souls who through Brian’s gift for the arts and Andrews’s gift for seeing more than most of us bring a new dimension for all to witness.

Brian is indefatigable. His enthusiasm, talent and passion is tangible, he exudes such moving energy. Tonight’s performance is about to begin, we take our chairs within a few meters of the stage, lights dramatise our proximity, the music begins to rise in tempo then the cast emerges from the wings. The stage is alive with energy!

Woza Cape Town is a story acted out by youngsters of divergent cultures. A black, coloured and white male each tell and act their life story. From the privileged white boy without love or care within his family to the angry black child with oodles of support from his broader family but little hope of achieving material greatness, the coloured actor oscillates between, lost in song, dance and the ambivalent status quo of ambiguity.

We are transported into their respective world that we know only too well. Both Claire & I benefited well during the apartheid era, whites were privileged in most scopes of society and commerce. As the cast wove their fabric of song and dance with such vigour, enthusiasm and precision, I could not help but realise just how poignant this show was becoming. These youngsters were reflecting our chequered past in vivid reality. No face saving mask of reason, just open dialogue shared not so much with anger and isolation but with the belief that we CAN co exist together and CAN respect each others culture, background and position within our cosmopolitan society.

As each song rang out, the cast grew in confidence. The dance routines were dazzling, the costumes inspiring. There was without doubt many in the audience this evening who had half their mind in the past and realising the futility of the apartheid era, the other half was alive with the sound of children singing and dancing the reality of the way forward for all of us.

Claire & I left the theatre in reflective silence, deep in thought of what we had both just experienced. If ever you doubt the future of our beloved country, if ever you feel despondent about our tomorrows, take a few hours to absorb Woza Cape Town, to revel in the combination of a Brian’s & Andrew’s vision coupled with the brilliant talent of our youth to come up with the answers to our adult questions.

Theatre in Latin America was already established even before the Europeans arrived to the continent

Theatre in Latin America was already established even before the Europeans arrived to the continent. The inhabitants of Latin America had their own practices, festivals, and ceremonials. They involved dance, singing of poems, song, theatrical spoof, mime, acrobatics, and magic performances. The entertainers were trained; they dress in costumes, makeup, masks and toupees. Platforms had been assembled to make visibility better. The ‘sets’ were garlanded with plants, branches from trees and other natural items.
The Europeans exploited this to their benefit. For the first fifty years subsequent to the conquest the missionaries made use of theatres widely to proliferate the Christian doctrine to inhabitants accustomed to the image and oral quality of show. It was more efficient to use the indigenous styles of communication than to put a conclusion to the ‘pagan’ customs, the conquerors grabbed the substance of the spectacles, maintained the trappings, and exercised them to express their own message.
At first the roles played in these austere religious performances such as the nativity as well as the adoration of the Magi were acted by priests in the shelter of the church. However, as the anthology of the Church grew to embrace the passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the Church was threatened with the predicament of how a priest should represent Herod. While sharing of opinion in the Church persisted as to the worth of theatrical interpretations, the constituents of the congregation undoubtedly enjoyed and were encouraged by them. The dramas persisted to grow, moving out of the Churches and into the open areas in front of the Church. Eventually, the members of town society began to play a role on these dramas, which persisted to grow more sophisticated with time. Known as passion dramas, miracle performance and morality acting, they continued their unrelenting close relationship with the Church and church festivals, but began to institute elements of typical characters that were more current in nature.
Throughout the 16th & 17th centuries the Latin theatre increased –with religion as its primary foundation. During the 16th century, they celebrated a religious festival three times annually regarded as the Corpus Christie festival which highlights the power of the Church. At the celebration, they performed dramas known as autos sacramentales. The autos sacramentales had some of the features of morality plays as well as some features of cycle plays, and they presented human as well as mystical characters. The plays that were conducted; sometimes old acting and sometimes new, were carried out by a single company and later on by two companies. The dramas were presented on carros, or carts, which held everything needed for presentations.
Pre-Hispanic ceremonies were how the natives came in contact with the religious. Spaniards exercised plays to Christianize and conquer the indigenous community of the Americas in the sixteenth century period. Theatre was a potent instrument in manipulating inhabitants already comfortable to spectacle. Theatre became a means for political influence on Latin America by colonialist plays by using indigenous routine practices to stage-manage the population. Furthermore, it presented a way for the indigenous inhabitants who were forced to involve themselves in the drama of their own downfall. In 1599, the priests even used dead bodies of Native Americans to represent the dead in the dramatization of the final judgment.
While the dramas were promoting a novel sacred order, their first precedence was to maintain the new secular, political stability. Theatres under the colonizers are principally at the service of the government. After disease, manipulation, and murder transpired to the native inhabitants, the indigenous consciousness and distinctiveness in theatre vanished, though pieces did have original essentials to them. The theatre that developed in Latin America is contended to be theatre that the colonizers brought to the Americas, not the plays of the Americas.
Development in Latin American Theaters
Internal conflict and external obstruction have been the determination behind Latin American chronicle which likewise applies to theatre. Below are the periods of Latin theater development:
1959-1968: dramaturgical composition and organization of community projects leaned more in the direction of creating a more native Latin American foundation called the “Nuestra America”
1968-1974: Theatre tries to declare a more homogenous characterization which introduces more European versions. At this point, Latin American Theatre attempted to associate to its historical ancestry.
1974-1984: The pursuit for expression entrenched in the history of Latin America developed into victims of banishment and death.
1985 – Present: Theatre producing establishments such as the Latino Theater Company emerged and continues to perform plays and comedy showcases.
After years of analyzing the Latino experience in daring, contemporary conditions, Latino Theaters continues to acknowledge and embrace the most diverse cities in the world in order to create a space that displays this rich culture and diversity.
The existing dynamic theaters nowadays will be a destination core for those practicing artistic superiority; a laboratory where both custom and innovation are respected and improved. Latino theatres will develop the creative vivacity that comes from individuals telling their own chronicles and digging deep into their own civilizations to address important matters of our day. Furthermore, it will deliver these skills and practices to young and emerging performers and generations. Mutually, the theatre and the performers, will create a freedom where the unification of people, traditions and ideas give birth to our future.
